Used motor oil never wears out. It just gets dirty and can be recycled, cleaned and used again, said Mike Mazza,president of American Petroleum Environmental Services,Inc., a Tacoma, Wash.-based, $20 million oil recycling company.
In 2002, Mazza bought an old truck and started collecting used oil around the Puget Sound and western Canada. By 2010, his 8-year-old company had purchased and renovated an oil refinery in Portland, Ore. "As far as I know, we're the first trucking company to purchase an oil refinery," said Mazza. "It's usually the other way around."
As American Petroleum has grown, so has its fleet of trucks. "Every dime I've made has gone back into this company," said Mazza, whose fleet now includes 25 trucks, mostly Kenworths. "I started the company using old trucks, and now I've updated my fleet with new Kenworths. I select trucks that are absolutely perfect for what we do - Kenworth T800s, T800 short hoods, T440s and T370s. Since I have driven just about every truck out there, I have enough personal experience to help spec the trucks and design the tankers. I can scale the most amount of product on the trucks, 10 to 15 percent more than any other truck on the road. These T800 short hoods and T440s consistently get 7.5 to 8.0 mpg on some route collection applications. And my drivers love Kenworths.

"We move in and out of car dealerships for a living with our T440s," said Mazza. "With the slope design of the hood, visibility is so much better. That's huge in our application. Our trucks leave the yard empty and, during the course of a day, they're driving around with 10,000, 15,000, 20,000 lbs. of side-to-side surge. The Kenworth air-ride suspension system keeps everything stable."
The latest addition to the fleet includes two new 2012 Kenworth T440s with Cummins ISL9 engines. "These T440s pull a 54,000 lb. load out of Yakima, Wash., to Seattle, with four- and five-mile stretches of nothing but up hills and down hills," said Mazza. "Our drivers get the truck up to speed, put it in 10th gear and switch on the cruise control. They don't have to downshift until they exit the freeway. That's how we know the T440 with Cummins ISL9 engine is the right truck."
With $27,000 invested in tanks and "plumbing" on each oil collection truck, Mazza purchases trucks for long-term durability. "I keep my trucks for years. That's why I own Kenworths. I expect twice the life from these trucks."
